Olympic Inspiration: EJ’s Journey at the Senior Games

Recently, we had the incredible opportunity to sit down with EJ, a remarkable athlete who continues to inspire everyone around her. EJ recently competed in the Senior Olympics, and her story is one of resilience, dedication, and pure passion for sport.

An Unforgettable Olympic Experience

EJ shared that one of her favorite parts of the Olympics was reconnecting with old friends. She picked up her friend, a nationally acclaimed ballroom dancer and former relay teammate, to attend the games. Even after recovering from a heart attack, her friend swam a 400 IM—showing that inspiration comes in many forms.

EJ reflected on the motivation found in the seniors’ competitions. “There were athletes in their late 70s, 80s, even some over 100, competing and medaling in multiple events. Seeing their drive is what keeps you going—you realize tomorrow can change everything, so make the most of today.”

Record-Breaking Achievements

EJ had an incredible performance at the games, winning eight medals: six individual and two relay events. She took home gold in the 50 free, 50 fly, 50 breast, 100 breast, 100 free, and the 100 IM, setting national records in four events, some of which had stood since 2005–2006.

Looking ahead, EJ plans to compete in the next Olympics in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She shared, “Every other year is a qualifying year for seniors, so next year, I might try qualifying in Florida since it’s closer to home. It’s a different challenge, but I’m up for it.”

Learning and Growing Through Competition

EJ described how her competitive spirit has evolved. She began serious competition at age 65, and since then, she has embraced every opportunity to improve and challenge herself. She has learned to understand her “pecking order” among competitors, setting personal goals against rivals while appreciating the efforts of all participants, even those who earn ribbons instead of medals.

Passion for Teaching

Beyond her own achievements, EJ is a dedicated swim instructor. Her colleagues highlight how much wisdom and knowledge she shares with her students, making a lasting impact on adults and children alike. From helping fearful adults gain confidence in the water to guiding young swimmers toward competitive success, EJ embodies the essence of teaching through action.

“She walks her talk,” says one of her colleagues. “Her students come back every session because of the passion and expertise she brings to every class.”

Swimming for Health and Joy

EJ emphasizes that swimming isn’t just a sport—it’s a holistic workout that strengthens the body and mind. Cardio, balance, and low-impact strength training all come naturally in the pool. She loves seeing students grow, gain confidence, and enjoy the transformative benefits of swimming.

A Lasting Impact

EJ’s journey at the Senior Olympics is more than a story of medals and records—it’s a story of inspiration, perseverance, and passion. She continues to motivate everyone she meets, showing that age is no barrier to achieving greatness, learning, and teaching others along the way.
